Surat
The city of Surat is situated on the bank of river Tapi in the West Indian state of Gujarat. Surat was a great port city during the Mughal period. Since the ancient times, the ancient port of Surat has been famous for its exclusive quality fine silks and exquisite brocades and its trade in various spices. Surat has been one of the most progressive of India’s cities in the 17th and 18th centuries. In Mughal times, Surat was the major port from which pilgrims sailed to Mecca. Presently, Surat is a major industrial city with many textile mills. Besides, Surat is also an important diamond-cutting centre in India. Situated in Valsad district, Surat is a home to leopards, tigers, panthers and wild boars. Today, Surat has became a major business city famous for its textile industry.
Porbandar
Further west of Junagadh, situated along the coast of Gujarat is Porbandar. Porbandar is a small port town that is connected with India's history through its association with Mahatma Gandhi. Porbandar in Gujarat is famous for being the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi. The home of Gandhiji's childhood, known by the name of Kirti Mandir is one major attraction of the place. Kasturba Gandhi, Gandhiji's wife, was also born in Porbandar. A chronological history on the life of the Mahatma is listed in the museum at Kirti Mandir.
Ahmedabad
Situated on the banks of the river Sabarmati, Ahmedabad is the former capital city and most important developed city of Gujarat. The city is haven of the fine amalgam of Indian and Muslim architecture. Unlike the old Ahmedabad, the new Ahmedabad has more of up-to-the-minute design architecture. Ahmedabad is also world renown for Gujarat handicrafts, such as, bandhani (tie / dye) work.
Known as the Manchester of India, Ahmedabad is presently famous for its textile mills and is often referred to as the 'Manchester of the East'. Besides, Ahmedabad has got numerous places of interest for tourists, ranging from monuments to amusement parks. The charisma of the various museums, mosques, and forts adds charm to the simplicity of the Ahmedabad city.
Rajkot
Rajkot in Gujarat owns the glory of being once the capital of the princely state of Saurashtra. Formerly it was a British government headquarters as well.
Rajkot in Gujarat is the place where Mahatma Gandhi had spent the early years of his life. Here you can visit the Gandhi family home, the Kaba Gandhi no Delo. The house now holds a permanent exhibition of Gandhiji's belongings
Sasan Gir
Sasan Gir is a world famous lion sanctuary situated at the base of the Saurashtra peninsula in the western state of Gujarat. To the north and west are the Gir hills. The forest is a tropical dry deciduous type, having teak as the chief species.
The Sasan Gir lion sanctuary project was started in 1972. Before and after independence, situations in Gir deteriorated speedily to the detriment of the Maldharis as well as the lions. So the government started to ponder over the matter.
Sasan Gir lion sanctuary is certainly a great success of India. From about 20 lions there are now around 300 lions in the park. Gir is also the home of one of the largest leopard populations in India.
Baroda
Baroda was the capital of the princely Gaekwad state prior to Independence. Today Baroda is a pleasant, medium-sized city with some interesting museums and art galleries and a fine park. The city's Fine Arts College attracts students from around the country and abroad.
